Halloween is coming....

I don't have Photoshop so I use iPhotos:

I added more exposure, more saturation and less contrast, Easy peasy...
Probably with Picassa or other simple Photo editor you could do the same. Now I do believe that the most important part is try to take good pictures with good natural light and neutral background. But in some cases when you don't have all the time (3 kids full time +1 part time)... this is an alternative....

For us, with the good healthy and conscious eating came the habit of reading labels and comparing ingredients to a fault. This habit has follow us across categories: edible and non-edible alike. Helping us understand the quality behind what we eat and wear, what we us and make.

We have been reminded to check for what's in our wallet, for what's in our cereal and other foods. As a handmade buyer and artist the friendly reminder should also be applied to know and share what's in our handmade!

Simple and less is more. Simple ingredients make for more natural products

When it comes to ingredients simple, and natural make for a better and tasteful result. No over processed "monodioxicarbonated-color # 5 and # 6" ingredients please.
Simple doesn't mean poor quality. If the list of materials are names that we can pronounce and sources that we can check and trust when tagged and labeled organic and fair trade, this just help shine what's behind the "simple" handmade product.

The mention of the product's friendliness to the environment, to vegans, non-vegans and all the green and honest categories in between polish that extra sparkle.

The Organic and Fair Trade Claim:

Own this claim with honesty. As buyers we don't mind to splurge when it comes to organic and fair trade products. As artists and makers we go the extra-mile to get the quality products to embellish our creations. We want to stay fashion- current and eco-socially responsible too. So we shop where a donation, a contribuition, a percentage of the net profit is foward to a cause. We love and we buy from those shops, places and indie-makers, and we won't mind spreading the word around!

For techniques and methods behind the handmade the more familiar terms with a light and insighful explanation will serve us well, from artist/ maker to buyer alike. This doesn't mean that a step-by-step how-to isntructions should be included, but a more everyday-description of what it is and how this is unique will go a long way.

Handmade is more than what meets the eye, a simple ingredient list will guide us to understand the quality and value each artist/ maker offers.

So next time you are browsing down the handmade market remember to ask " what's in your handmade?"

Swap-O-Rama-Rama

I was reading about Swap-o-Rama-Rama and got very intrigued ...then I realized that a couple of years ago I went to something very similar and was really fun.

If you don't know anything about it I can tell you what I found: Swap-o-Rama-Rama is an event usually held in a community space (in Chicago is in the Waldorf School),

First part consist in bring a bag of unwanted clothing and a small donation. Your bag will be added to the swap pile. Everyone is welcome to take a little or a lot from the swap pile while working on swap items.

Second (and funnest) part is that local volunteers set up stations (can be silk-screening, sewing, jewelry making, reconstruction, embroidery, etc) and they offer participants help transform their finds.

So in few words Swap-o-Rama-Rama means crafty local affair... and can't wait to go to the next one!!

Swap-o-Rama-Rama es un evento muy entretenido que se está haciendo acá en USA, y que ha comenzado a difundirse en otros países como Canadá, Inglaterra, Israel, Turquía y Panamá. Nunca he participado, pero hace unos años estube en una feria muy similar y la verdad es que la encontré bastante entretenida.

La idea es que uno como adhesión lleva una bolsa con ropa que no uses y una donación (lo que puedas pagar) de eso se hace un fondo común. Cada persona saca lo que quiera.

Luego, artesanos y voluntarios ayudan a "refaccionar" las "nuevas" prendas de manera entretenida...creo que es una idea brillante y me encantaría que se hiciera algo similar en Chile y/o en todos los países...

Welcome Spring

...Spring... I just smell Spring, in fact I'm getting allergies...but I don't care, it is not snowing... and I'm getting happier everyday with the sunlight. We've been going out a lot. Yesterday Phoenix learned how to ride his tricycle by himself. He's getting so independent!!

I've been reading some interesting books about Eco-friendly living and one important point in all of them is how and with what do you clean your home:

Here's a list of some versatile and non toxic products you should have at home:

(list from the book Green this! by Deirdre Imus)

All-purpose cleaner for floor, counters, kitchen surfaces, bathrooms, tubs, tiles, carpets, spills ad stains

Window/glass cleaner

automatic dish-washing detergent

Hand dish-washing detergent liquid for pots, dishes, pans, silver, etc (Just in case...You can find biodegradable dish soap at Target for less than $3.00)

Laundry liquid

Baking soda: Very useful: Can neutralized acid, scrub shiny material, unclog drains, you can use it as an deodorant in the refrigerator, can polish aluminum.

Distilled White Vinegar: Great for removing stains, can dissolve mineral deposits and grease, remove traces of soap, mildew. You also can polish some metals, clean carpets, windows, bricks, toilets, stones.

Lemon Juice: Natural odor eater, can remove stain from aluminum, cooper, clothes and porcelain. With the sunlight can use it as bleach

Salt: Great to remove dust

As you know I'm pregnant that means I'm always hungry.... Yesterday we had a really rainy day (Welcome Spring!!) and I was craving for some chili but my way... I mean a Vegan-Chilean way.

Instead of meat we added some vegan sausage, rice, fresh tomatoes and spices. It was good in fact my little one ate it all...

After that Phoenix helped me wash the dishes. He was so into his job that got dressed for the ocassion.

Actually I don't have any Irish blood in my veins. I never celebrated this holiday before, but I just love green and love to see the river painted.

I like watch people so proud of their heritage wearing green hat and accessories. But the funnest part is realized that catholic people celebrate a amazing fest during lent... now I'm not saying that we have to fast for 40 days, but doesn't make sense...

My neighborhood

Today was a very nice day, windy but nice... After dropped Aura off at school Phoenix and me went for a walk around our neighborhood...I love it!! so colorful, bright and friendly... It reminds me Valparaiso (Chile)

After been hibernating for almost 2 months....is time to see the world!! to change the white for some colors...the gray clouds for a blue sky and now that I'm growing everyday (more than I suppose to) I need to exercise more...

now one complain:

I really don't know why, probably (we don't have a dog) clean the dog's poop on Winter has to be really hard... but all the side walks are full of surprises...so with a 2 year old running around is hard to be aware of what he step on...

As a new resolution for this month: Today I started my long walks (again) after the snow always comes the sun....people say.... and this morning wasn't bad so I walked 45 minutes and had a healthy breakfast. I did some yoga with Phoenix and cleaned the house...now I'm exhausted, but felling OK.

Surfing online this morning I found this cool site that has a lot of interesting info about "green" stuff. One of the posts that caught my eyes was this super tiny microwave. It measures 10-1/2-inch wide by 12-inch high by 10-inch deep.

Since we don't use them, I got very tempted.... Now why don't we have one? my family and friends don't understand our decision, but actually my husband still thinks microwaves are not good for our health...all those molecules vibrating like crazy, plus the food (this is my opinion) doesn't taste good...well maybe this desing would change his mind because I believe it is really cute!!

Now how the trucks cleaned up the streets, there are some big mountains in every corner....Aura said that there were crystal mountains, as always she was given it her 'magical touch'...

Phoenix swimming on the snow...

Well I hope so...because last night was crazy. My husband took a taxi to go to work, no idea how many inches were (or are) of snow but you could hardly walk...in fact all the cars parked were almost covered. Good thing is that Aura didn't have School so we went out for a little play time with our neighbors.

They had really fun. The Kids tried to build an igloo but was sort of hard and for the men was harder to clean the sidewalks..

Now is getting cold again... I feel like a bear.... and wish I could be in California or Florida....

Long Earrings and Special Jewelry

Talking about Long earring I was looking on my stuff and I have to show some of my beloved jewelry.

Here are these lovely earrings made of recycled leather and feathers....(100% eco-friendly!!!)
I traded them with Sharron of Cosmo Beets a while ago. Every time I wear them I received more than one complement.

Everybody should check her store, very stylish and unique items.

Another beautiful piece is this stunning bracelet. A good neighbor and friend made it for me. She is so talented!! In fact I suggested her have her own Etsy Store but she's very busy.

For Christmas she gave one bracelet for Aura (she loves it so much that everyday wants to wear them for school...) and this one for me.

and the last but not the least is this very hippie boho style quartz brought it directly from the Elqui Valley. Like 2 years ago I went to visit a good friend from School and she gave me this wonderful full of energy pendant (of course she made it). I wear it almost everyday and clean it with sea salt.

El Valle del Elqui is one of my favorites places in Chile. It's "an oasis of wandering goats, fermented grapes and telescopes". It has the clearest sky in the whole world... There it's a very important observatory: "Mamalluca Municipal Observatory".

New Background

I've been looking for a new background/scenery/ good light place for a long time... During the summer I take the pictures on my old porch but now it's impossible to go outside without double wrapping the kids... Here one of my models helped me in a new/test photo session.

In this session I realized that for me (Chicago winter time) the best light is at noon, just because it not so direct and I can fix almost anything with the screens. Use my simple canon camera in day light and digital macro.

Now the problem is how to keep this kiddos still....so one though is to save some money and take this online curse for babies, toddlers and kids

Knitting Tower

Aura got for Christmas a Knitting Tower from Palumba. So we've been knitting for a couples of days. The funniest part is, when I showed it to my mom, she told me that my nanny used to make towers with old wooden cone threads and nails.... That was so creative! well, This tower is great (probably the developed version of my nanny's). Love it! perfect for tiny hands (and mine too). Easy to learn and use. It came with enough yarn to knit a chunky scarf for a barbie, instructions, project ideas.

For the price ($7.99 + shipping) it's a good find in Winter time.

One of the ideas that came with this product was make finger puppets. Last night we finished our first. 100% Aura's design. She wanted to make a princess but actually it looks more like Sally of The Nightmare before Christmas. I believe it looks beautiful anyways! (as always)...

A very NOT good week....

...tough day...

I'm so happy today is Sunday...am I gonna rest??...nooooo!!!but is the start of a new week...

Last was quiet crazy: Starting with a broken stroller...yes!! I broke Phoenix's stroller....It was bizarre.....I was walking toward a thrift store for some goodies when I saw a whole on the sidewalk. I skipped it but I'm not so sure how my foot got on it and almost felt over Phoenix. I tried to move to the other side and BOOM! ...in one second I got a wheel in my hand...Aluminum is light but maybe not for me... well is not a big deal, the stroller was old but we had to walk a lot specially for a 2 year old boy... it was fun though... Besides that:

I burned twice dinner...
My husband had a seminar that means grumpiness...
and the kids got sick...good thing I'm feeling OK. A sick mom is the worse thing on earth in a everyday life of course...
Aura asked me to cut her beautiful hair... I did!!!

Now the good part of the story:

Aura had a very good report card
Another tooth felt out and she didn't cried
Phoenix is doing great with the potty training

Probably last week wasn't so bad....

Last Friday after her friends left, Aura's first tooth felt out. It was quiet an event.  She started crying,  I asked her why... she told me that actually she  didn't know...in one hand it was sad, she was loosing her tooth (one part of herself...) but in the other she was finally growing... indeed she's growing and so fast that I'm felling some nostalgia.

The story ends very well: How the Tooth Fairy didn't have change, Aura got more money that she (and we) were expecting... now she saving money for some special moment...

El viernes pasado después de que sus amigas se fueron, Aura perdió su primer diente de leche. Fue un gran aconteciemiento. Ella empezó a llorar así que le pregunté por qué? ella me dijo que la verdad no sabía; por un lado su diente se había caído (era parte de ella), pero por otra se sentía más grande... y en verdad está creciendo a pasos agigantados que en algunos momentos me da nostalgia...

La historia termina bien, ya que el Hada de los dientes o como se hace llamar por otro lados, el Ratón Perez, no tenía cambio así mi niña recibió más dinero de lo que estaba (y nosostros) esperando.

Last weekend we made some homemade dough with the kids. Some friend came over so was the perfect activity for little ones in a cold day. They made cakes, cookies, beads and of course mixed all the colors....Here is a fun and easy recipe:

NO - COOK  PLAY DOUGH

1 c. water
3 c. flour
1 1/2 c. salt
1/4 c. oil
Food coloring

Combine ingredients in bowl and mix. Add more flour if mixture is too sticky. Store in a plastic zip-lock bag. (Actually we don't use zip lock bags so we stored them in plastic (recycled) containers...)

1 taza de agua
3 tazas de harina
1 1/2 taza de sal
1/4 taza aceite
anilina vegetal
Combine los ingredients en un bowl y mezcle. Agregue mas harina si la maza está muy pegajosa. Guardela en blosas zip lock o en contenedores plásticos (yo uso de yogurt o cualquiera que tenga cierre hermetic)
